December 2006 saw the installation of the latest commission of Nigel Helyer's sound sculpture, Lotus , in the lake at Joondalup. His concept was that of a floating sound sculpture. Spun aluminium 'horn' speakers are positioned on marine grade steel rods in two circular formations. The sound mechanism is energised by solar panels. The sound component is a series of ten recited Japanese Haiku poems each composed of three lines. Solar timers randomly trigger the line of text stored in each audio unit, in effect transforming the ten individual Haiku into a constantly re-mixed 'Mega-Haiku'. The sound being strong enough to hear but subtle enough not to dominate.
The commission was awarded to Nigel Helyer because the work was viewed to be innovative and the first technology driven sound-sculpture in Western Australia. The result was seen as an interaction between science and art and has a strong physical presence on campus.
