Academic Development

The primary purpose of Academic Development is to service the learning and teaching related professional development needs of ECU academic staff.

The range of academic professional development activities are determined in conjunction with the teaching and learning priorities of the University, the expressed needs of Associate Deans’ Teaching and Learning and Heads of School and through consultation with relevant groups and individuals.

ALTC Grants and Fellowships 2009

The ALTC offers Australian universities a substantial annual grants program that includes three different Program categories:

  1. Competitive Grants (approximately $3.4 million)
  2. Leadership for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (approximately $2.8 million)
  3. Priority Projects (approximately $4.9 million)

Program Guidelines for the three categories of ALTC grants can be downloaded from the ALTC website

It should be noted that grant applications which show evidence of serious collaboration with other universities are more likely to be successful.

Vice Chancellor’s learning and teaching award application form 2009

Vice Chancellor’s learning and teaching award guidelines 2009

There are two levels of teaching and learning related awards that might interest ECU staff. There are the local ECU awards and the national awards. The local ECU VC L&T Awards mirror the national Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) Awards for obvious strategic reasons. Winners of VC L&T Awards in any given year are therefore in a very good position to press for ECU nomination in the corresponding ALTC category in the same year.
