Radiation and Biosafety Committee

terms of reference

To advise and inform the Vice-Chancellor and the University Occupational Safety and Health Committee on:

  • legislative requirements for the safe use, handling and disposal of radioactive substances, irradiating equipment, biological materials and hazardous chemicals;
  • policy matters relating to purchase, storage, use and disposal of radioactive substances, irradiating equipment, biological materials and hazardous chemicals;
  • certification of laboratories and personnel in accordance with the guidelines for Recombining DNA research and radiation safety;
  • inspection of University facilities where a radioactive, chemical and biological hazard may exist;
  • review of safe working practices and procedures for the use of radioactive substances, irradiating equipment, biological materials and hazardous chemicals;
  • records for worker exposure, radioactive substances, irradiating equipment, biological materials and hazardous chemicals;
  • appropriate training courses for users of radioactive substances, irradiating equipment, biological materials and hazardous chemicals;
  • preparation of reports for the Radiological Council, National Committees and other statutory authorities as required on all matters of radiation safety, biosafety and hazardous substances;
  • legislative and safety requirements for new projects involving radioisotopes, irradiating equipment, biological materials and hazardous chemicals;
  • all matters relating to radiation, biological and hazardous chemical materials with the provision of a reference and referral point.
