  
The Animal Ethics Committee (AEC) abides by the guidelines contained in the following statements and legislation, in order to ensure the humane care of animals used for scientific purposes, including teaching. Applicants must ensure that they have read and understood this information before submitting an application:
Student researchers are advised to discuss their ethics applications with their supervisors when preparing an ethics application.
Applicants should make sure that all necessary documents are included with their ethics applications. An application for ethics approval will usually include:
- Ethics Application Form
- Research Proposal
Other documents that may assist the AEC include:
- Ethics approval from any other AEC
- Any required permits or licences
- Letters of approval from other institutions or organisations involved in the research
Ethics applications are completed and submitted online via STREAM – the System for Tracking Research Ethics Applications and Monitoring.

Please ensure that you check the AEC meeting dates. Applications must be submitted by the close of Agenda to be reviewed at the next meeting.
A preliminary review of applications is conducted by the Research Ethics Officer. This ensures that all information is included. Applicants may be asked for additional information or changes to the application. Make any necessary changes via STREAM and return the application.
Your application may also be circulated to the AEC via email to allow for any preliminary comments. Please note that review of applications can only be conducted at quorate meetings of the AEC.
Your ethics application (including all related documents) will then be placed on the Agenda for review by the AEC at the next meeting. Applicants are encouraged to attend the AEC meeting to discuss the application with the Committee. Please contact the Research Ethics Officer for meeting details.
The application for ethics approval is reviewed by the members of the AEC. You will be advised of the outcomes of the review and may need to include additional information, clarification or changes. Make any necessary changes via STREAM and return your application.
You can track the progress of your application through the review process via STREAM.
You will be notified once your application has been approved. Notification of ethics approval will also be sent to other areas of the University if necessary, e.g. Graduate Research School or the Office of Research and Innovation.
Once your application has been approved, the Research Ethics Officer will then request that you provide one hard copy of the signed application form together with all the other documentation listed above to the Research Ethics Office.
IMPORTANT
Scientific or teaching activities involving the use of animals may not commence before written approval is given.
All approved research projects are approved subject to compliance with monitoring procedures. You will be notified via STREAM by email when a report is due.
