Green Computers

Question: Did you think that screen savers were energy savers?

Answer: If you answered yes to the question above, you would be wrong!

Screen savers are in fact enegy wasters. Most computers use about twice the amount of energy lighting up the screen as they use for processing. Originally screen savers were designed to stop screens being burnt by a constant image, but they are needed for modern screens.

Screen savers can use as much energy as a full screen of work and require considerable processing energy as well.

Save energy by setting your screen saver to 'none' or 'blank screen' (instructions can be found below).

Tips to remember to reduce energy whilst using your pc;

  • Set your screen saver to 'blank' or 'none' to save energy. You can do this by clicking on - 'start' - 'control panel' - 'display' - on the 'screen saver' tab in the 'screen saver' box use the drop down box and choose either 'blank' or '(none)'.
    You can also choose how much time that you would like to elapse before the blank screen is activated in the box marked 'wait'.
  • Adjust your monitor power to an environmentally friendly setting by clicking on - 'control panel' - 'display' - 'screen saver' - in the box marked 'monitor power' click on 'power...' - in the 'settings for home/ office desk power scheme' drop down the 'turn off monitor' menu - then you can choose one of the following environmentally friendly options;
      • Automatically 'Turn off monitor' after fifteen minutes
      • Automatically 'Turn off hard disks' after twenty minutes
      • Activate 'System Standby' after thirty minutes
      • Activate 'System Hibernates' after four hours
  • Switch your computer and screen OFF whenevr you are away from your desk for more than one hour.
  • Switch your computer and monitor OFF outside working hours.
  • If you are going away on holiday or before Christmas Closedown, switch off the plug at the wall and remove the plug from the wall. This will protect your hard drive and computer from possible damage due to power surge in your absence - and despite popular belief it does NOT wipe your hard drive!
  • Laptops use less energy than desk top pc's so if you are looking to update your hardware - perhaps consider a laptop.
