The Legal Services Office (LSO) provides legal advice to senior officers and academic staff in relation to University matters. Its role is to support staff in protecting the interests of the University. Its aims are to provide timely, professional advice to assist in minimising legal risk and reducing the likelihood of litigation.
Staff are encouraged to refer matters to LSO at an early stage in any proposal or project where legal issues may arise.
Legal advice is provided primarily by the University Lawyer. External lawyers may be engaged by the University Lawyer in some instances, in consultation with the staff member seeking advice.
LSO provides advice in a range of areas including:
- drafting agreements and reviewing agreements prepared by external parties;
- interpretation of legislation including ECU Statutes, By-laws and Rules;
- intellectual property issues including copyright;
- management of litigation involving the University;
- legal requirements in respect to compliance in areas including privacy, freedom of information and trade practices; and
- subpoenas for production of ECU records.
LSO does not provide personal legal advice to students or staff.
LSO asks that staff:
- contact LSO before committing the University to any legal relationship; and
- forward any agreements that require the signature of the Vice-Chancellor to LSO using the briefing format provided.
Please help LSO to help you by providing written requests for legal advice, identifying matters of concern where applicable, providing relevant background information and allowing reasonable timelines for the provision of legal services where possible. Seeking legal advice.
