The Bologna Process is a commitment by 45 European countries (an approximately equal number of European Union and non-European Union countries) to undertake a series of reforms in order to achieve greater consistency and portability of qualifications across their Higher Education systems.
A "European Higher Education Area" will be created by 2010 and there will also be a smaller European Research Area by 2012, established through a separate process.
Notes of a DEST consultation meeting on the Bologna Process are available (opens in MS Word in a new browser).
The Australian Higher Education sector will need to respond to ensure that the Australian system remains relevant to international standards, in order for Australia to remain competitive in International student markets.
Details of Australia's response to the Bologna Process can be found at the Australian Education International web site (opens in a new browser).

The first trial of Portfolio Entry commenced at ECU in Semester 1 2006 and this paper was developed to track the success of students gaining entry to ECU by Portfolio Entry.
