After several months of review and discussion in the
University community, Council settled the revised strategic
priorities for the University for the years ahead at
the December 2006 meeting. These planning documents
set out the philosophical position to guide what the
University should be doing and how those activities
should be undertaken. The documentation establishes
a clear sense of purpose and provides “signposts”.
Since universities have a major leadership role in
their many communities, it is important to chart a course
that is not subject to day-to-day and week-to-week changes
in response to external pressures. It is important to
have the courage to hold to an agreed course which has
been well thought-through and is widely accepted as
the right path. However, the University needs to be
flexible and able to respond rapidly to opportunities
(and threats) as they arise.
This University’s strategic planning documentation
will therefore be dynamic, and made up of several components:
the Mission, Vision, Values, Graduate Attributes, Long-Term
Goals, Strategic Priority Areas and Annual Goals; the
Budget (approved annually but generally in a context
of three or four years ahead); and Three-Year Functional
Plans (updated yearly).
Updates to the planning priorities for ECU were discussed and settled at the December Council meeting 2007.
