Notes:
- Mean values are calculated after recoding the responses strongly disagree , disagree, neither agree nor disagree, agree and strongly agree to –100, –50, 0, 50, and 100 respectively.
- Percentage agreement is defined as the percentage of applicable responses that are either agree or strongly agree.
- Group scale values (unit, school and faculty) are calculated from the aggregated relevant group of student responses.
- N is the number of respondents in the group.
Mean scores range from −100 to 100 while percentages range from 0 to 100. A negative mean indicates that student s predominantly disagree with the corresponding item (or items) while a positive mean indicates predominant agreement, the larger the score the better. Percentage agreements may be interpreted as student satisfaction rates.
For each UTEI component; unit lecturer and tutor; the best single summary scale is the overall satisfaction (OS), preferably the mean but also the percentage agreement. A single measure of teaching overall satisfaction is the average of the lecturer and tutor OS scores, mean and percentage agreement, as follows.
-
Teaching OS = (Lecturer OS + Tutor OS)/2
Similarly the best single measure of UTEI overall satisfaction, combining unit, lecturer and tutor overall satisfaction , is the average of the unit and teaching OS scores, mean and percentage agreement, as follows.
-
UTEI OS = (Unit OS + Teaching OS)/2
University UTEI reports are generated for two collection periods (CPs) per year by aggregating UTEI data from teaching periods as follows.

Collection periods from the inception of the UTEI system in 2002/2 are labelled CP022, CP031, CP032, and so on , with each collection period coded in the format CPyy#.
Each University UTEI report for a collection period lists all unit, lecturer and tutor scale scores, mean and percentage agreement, for all schools, faculties and the University. The report also lists the corresponding teaching overall satisfaction (OS) scores:
Teaching OS = (Lecturer OS + Tutor OS)/2 and the UTEI overall satisfaction (OS) scores:
UTEI OS = (Unit OS + Teaching OS)/2
Thus each University UTEI report lists the results of schools, faculties and the University for five UTEI evaluation components; unit, lecturer, tutor, teaching (overall satisfaction only ) and UTEI (overall satisfaction only ).
