What Is VPN?

Short for virtual private network, these systems use encryption and other security mechanisms to ensure that only authorised users can access the network and that the data cannot be intercepted.

Some services at ECU are not available directly from the internet as the service is classed for sensitivity and security reasons as being an internal service only. The ECU VPN service provides a secure communication path back to the campus network over the internet.

Unless these steps are taken to secure your communications, your private information -- such as usernames, passwords, payroll information and email messages -- may be intercepted by malicious users.

VPN Installation Instructions

Installing the VPN Client Software

These instructions are for :-

Windows 98
Windows ME
Windows 2000 *
Windows XP *

* (You will require administrative privileges on your PC to be able to install the product for these Operating Systems)

Prior to installation of this software please ensure that any previous version of the Nortel VPN Client has been removed from your computer. This can be achieved from the control panel using the Add / Remove Program option.

Click Download Software to download the VPN installer software to your computer. The latest version of the VPN Client is v6.01

Ignore any warning message like the one above and click the Open button.

Once downloaded a self extraction and setup program will run.

Click the OK button and this will start the set-up program for the VPN client. Once the installation has completed you will be asked to restart your computer.

Please make sure that you have saved any open documents before restarting the computer.

Once the PC has restarted you may delete the folder on your C drive called 'ecuvpn'. This is the temporary location that was used for the set-up files. Leaving this folder on your machine will not cause any problems.

Using the VPN Client Software

Some systems and services within ECU require VPN access to use. So you will need to use your ECU VPN Client whenever you need to access these systems. All you need to do is to double click the ECU icon on your desktop or click 'Contivity VPN Client' in your Start Menu.

This will open the VPN Client authentication window (see below). Enter your usual Active Directory username and password (this is the same password that is used when authenticating via the proxy servers and the one used for your Exchange / Outlook connection.)

Click the connect button.

The connection will display a banner message – read the message and click OK to continue.

You will now be able to access systems available through the VPN service.
