Teaching and Learning Guide and "The Little Red Book (Teaching @ ECU) At ECU, we see the quality of our academic staff and their teaching as one of our main strengths. University teaching is a creative activity that fosters students' intellectual and personal growth and promotes effective rather than superficial learning. Teaching at a university requires a high level of competence and expertise in the discipline area together with a high level of communication and interpersonal skills. While university teaching draws on this professional expertise of staff, it is continually being revitalised by the findings of research and professional practice. Effective university teachers are reflective practitioners, reflecting critically on their own teaching and on the quality of their students' learning in a way that engenders continuous improvement. The aim of this guide is to assist you, whether you are a new or experienced academic staff member, to become more knowledgeable and effective in the academic teaching environment at ECU. It provides you with an outline of ECU's aims in teaching and learning together with an introduction to the policies and procedures that you must know to fulfil your teaching responsibilities. It discusses some of the possible approaches that can be adopted in your teaching and suggests ways of overcoming some of the more frequently encountered problems. In addition, it provides you with details of the ECU teaching and learning environment, the organisational structure of the University and information about the services and facilities supporting the academic teaching program. This guide does not attempt to reproduce or be a compilation of all the information available from other sources such as the ECU Handbook, or electronically from websites accessed via the ECU Home page. Further, this guide is not a replacement for the formal and informal induction and staff development activities that already take place at the University, Faculty and School levels. Nor is it a substitute for the knowledge and wisdom gained through the experience of academic work and familiarity with ECU that develops over time. However, I trust that you find the guide useful and wish you well in your teaching career at ECU.
