Starting Elluminate Live! via MyECU

Elluminate Live! is an online collaboration tool which enables groups to communicate using text and voice and to share presentations, websites, documents, their desktops and applications.

If you are using it on campus, in a lab or via the ECU wireless network, then a few settings are required to set up the ECU Proxy, through which you need to authenticate to access the internet.

Initially this software requires a quick installation of some Java software, after which connection should be a lot easier. These instructions will help you to connect to Elluminate Live! for the first time.

The following instructions are aimed at people using Windows XP and Internet Explorer, but most of the steps will still apply to firefox for Windows and Mac OSX/safari/firefox users, other than the need to install Java Web Start (see below).

Instructions

Go to your MyECU site and click the link to the elluminate session in your MyECU site. This will depend where your lecturer/tutor decides to put the link, but In the case below the link is in Assessments and is named "Essay Chat":

If you are on campus (in a lab or using the ECU wireless network) you should then be asked to authenticate to access the ECU proxy server.

Enter your student username and password (the same one you use to log into your student email, MyECU etc):

On a computer running Windows XP, the first time you use Elluminate you will be asked to download Java Web Start, which is a small piece of sotware which is required to run the Elluminate Live! application. Note though that it still might take a little while if you have a slow connection and you will only need to download this once.

If you are using a Mac then this should already be installed and you can skip the next few steps which are concerned with downloading Java Web Start. You can just click the "Start Elluminate Live!" button.

Click on "Get Required Software":

elluminate install java web start page

A pop up box should appear. Click on "Run" to download and open the Java Web Start installer:

The java application should begin downloading. You will see a progress bar which, when complete, will provide another warning box. Click on "Run" again to install the software:

Elluminate should then open and try to connect. You will then see a box appear so you can set your connection speed.

If you are at home then choose the appropriate speed (usually either 56k dialup or Cable/DSL) and Click "OK". You don't need to follow the rest of the instructions because they are concerned with connecting while on campus. You should be able to connect to Elluminate Live! straight away and be able to see your name appear in the participants section of the Elluminate Live! session window (see the last screenshot). If you have trouble with this then you may need to check your firewall rules (if you have a home firewall set up).

If you are on campus, click "Cancel" because you need to set up to connect via the ECU Proxy:

elluminate - select connection speed pop up

To set up Elluminate Live! to connect via the ECU Proxy, go to Tools > Preferences:

elluminate - changing proxy settings

Click on "Proxy Settings" and enter:

Method: HTTP Proxy Server

Server: proxy.ecu.edu.au

Port: 80

and the click "Apply", then "OK":

A connection box should appear while Elluminate tries to connect via the ECU Proxy. Another proxy authentication box will appear:

All being well, you should then see your name appear in the participants section in the Elluminate Live! session window. If the connection fails for some reason, check you have entered the proxy information correctly (see above) and make sure your username and password were entered correctly.
