Sexual assault is never okay

Friday, 12 February 2016

Today, ECU is part of the launch of a national campaign to prevent sexual assault and harassment.

Respect. Now. Always. is about ensuring students and staff are safe from sexual assault and sexual harassment.

In launching this campaign, there are two messages I want to get across to the ECU community.

One, sexual assault or sexual harassment is never acceptable.

Two, if you need support and help, please seek it out. Our student support services and, for emergencies, campus security teams are here to help.

The Respect. Now. Always. campaign coincides with the Australian release of the US documentary The Hunting Ground.

This powerful film looks at sexual assault in American universities. While it’s important to acknowledge there are many differences between the US and Australian university system, the release of the film is also an opportunity discuss the issue and identify what more we can do to stamp out sexual assault and empower those affected by it.

ECU will be hosting free screenings of the documentary for students at each of our campuses in April. I hope you can attend one of these screenings and participate in the discussion afterwards.
