'Tis the Season

The Christmas and New Year period is one of the busiest on most peoples’ calendars. Some look forward to the multitude of events and parties with relish, whilst others dread the thought of attending yet another Christmas ’do’. Whatever your preference, make the most out of the events you’ll be attending with our top five networking quick tips below.

Do Your Homework

Find out who will be attending the event; think about what you’d like to know about them (company, role, career journey, issues/needs) and what you want them to know about you (company, role, strengths, goals/direction).

Have a Solid Introduction

First impressions count so make sure your attitude and attire is in tip top shape before introducing yourself to others.

The 60/40 Rule

Do more listening than talking; 60% of the conversation should be about them, 40% about you. Use open ended questions like who, what, where, when, could you tell me more about... to encourage others to speak.

Follow Up

Find a reason to stay in touch and ensure you follow up and deliver on any promises (e.g. passing on a contact or useful piece of information).

Have an Exit Strategy

People’s time is precious, including yours, so know when it’s time to move on. Consider phrases like ‘It’s been nice to meet you’, ‘I promised a few others I’ll catch up with them tonight’, ‘Can I introduce you to anybody?’ and, if all else fails, ‘I’m going to grab another drink / head to the bathroom’.
