Transport

We manage the environmental aspects of staff and student travel and the University fleet through the program called the “Transport – Environmental Improvement Program”.

Our targets for the “Travel” Program are to:

  • The proportion of staff and students who commute to ECU using alternative forms of transport to be 10% higher than the 2010 baseline by 2020.
  • Greenhouse gas emissions from the University fleet reduced by 10% of the 2008 baseline by 2020.
  • Maintaining certification of ISO/ANZS 140001 Environmental Management Systems.

In 2010 it was found that 18% of staff  and 41% of students used alternative forms of Transport which includes walking, cycling and taking public transport.

The Transport program is all about choosing sustainable, healthy alternatives to using your car. There are many easy ways to get to our campuses without driving your car, these can be both cost and time effective.  We are promoting initiatives across our campuses to help you choose alternative methods of transport to commute to and from the University, these include;

  • Provide detailed maps for cycling, walking and public transport options
  • Provide secure bike parking, showers, lockers
  • ECU is developing a Campus Access Strategy
  • ECU Carpool system
  • Joondalup Cat Service from the Joondalup train station
  • An ECU event for bike week each year

Since 2006 We have engaged in a program with Carbon Neutral Ltd to offset the carbon emission produced by our fleet vehicles. In 2009 we offset our fleet related carbon emissions by having a total of 2700 oli mailee trees planted on a farm outside Beverley, Western Australia.

For more information on the tree planting project visit the Carbon Neutral planting projects web page, our planting project is site 122, Bally Bally.
