Waste and recycling

We manage the environmental aspects of waste and recycling through a program called the “Waste Produced – Environmental Improvement Program”. The aim of the program is to reduce our waste to landfill and recyclables to landfill by 5% per annum.

Our targets for the “Waste Produced” Program are to:

  • Reduce waste to landfill by 20% from 2008 benchmark by 2015;
  • Maintaining Certification of ISO/ANZS 14001 Environmental Management Systems.

In 2009, 533 tonnes of waste was disposed in landfill and 149 tonnes of waste was recycled.

To help us reach these targets we have introduced initiatives across our campuses, these include;

  • Battery Bins on all our campuses;
  • Toner cartridge recycling;
  • Paper and cardboard recycling;
  • On-grounds co-mingled recycling bins;
  • Co-mingled recycling bins in our kitchens;
  • Recycling bins for events; and
  • Electronic waste collection

We have also introduced Aquafil Filtered Water Refill Stations on our campuses to encourage students and staff to re-use water containers and to reduce the amount of plastic water bottles going to landfill. ECU marketing student Matt Redway designed the innovative artwork featured on the refill stations to inform students to refill instead of purchasing and disposing of plastic water bottles.
