Doctoral programs

A research degree involves making an original contribution to knowledge through the production of a thesis. There are four models* of doctoral study at ECU:

  • Doctor of Philosophy
  • Doctor of Philosophy (Integrated)
  • Joint Doctor of Philosophy
  • Onshore/Offshore Doctor of Philosophy

Doctor of Philosophy
Type: Standard PhD
What is it? A supervised research degree program which culminates in the submission of a thesis or creative work plus exegesis. More information
Duration: 3 years full-time (or the equivalent part-time).
Who should apply? Candidates with a research background.
Entry requirements: Bachelor degree, plus honours or master by research.
Doctor of Philosophy (Integrated)
Type: Integrated research preparation
What is it? The Integrated PhD has a foundation year of research preparation followed by a three-year supervised research degree program which culminates in the submission of a thesis or creative work plus exegesis. The first year includes research methods, communicating and promoting your research, writing and reading skills for researchers, a research project and discipline-specific units. At the end of the first year, students who choose to exit the program may be eligible for a Master of Research Practice. More information
Duration: 4 years full-time (or the equivalent part-time).
Who should apply? Top candidates from coursework backgrounds, or those who would like a structured PhD program.
Entry requirements: The minimum admission requirement is a four year Bachelor degree with a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 70% or higher, Honours degree, Masters by Coursework or the equivalent in a relevant field from a recognised university. Candidates will be assessed on their academic, research and professional experience, and only be admitted if there is supervisor capacity and required expertise in the field of research. Candidates are expected to have an IELTS score of 6.5 (no individual band less than 6.0) or equivalent.
Joint Doctor of Philosophy
Type: PhD in collaboration with another institution
What is it? A supervised research degree program between ECU and a partner university, which culminates in the submission of a thesis or creative work plus exegesis. The Joint PhD program is conducted under a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between ECU and the partner institution. Candidates must spend a minimum of one year of their degree at each institution. Graduate will receive two parchments, one from each university, to recognise the dual award. More information

Onshore/Offshore Doctor of Philosophy
What is it? A supervised research degree program for academic staff from partner universities which culminates in the submission of a thesis or creative work plus exegesis. This program is a blended model of study which flexible delivery, including face-to-face instruction at ECU, and continuing supervision from your home institution. More information

Who should apply? Academics from  partner universities with a strong research background.
Entry requirements: Bachelor degree, plus honours or master by research.
