WA Opposition Leader Mark McGowan and the Shadow Cabinet have visited ECU’s Joondalup Campus to see how the University is working with communities in Perth's northern suburbs.

In what was the first visit for the group since Mark McGowan became Opposition Leader, the Shadow Cabinet toured ECU’s state-the-art facilities and viewed community programs in action.

These included:

  • The Interprofessional Ambulatory Care Program (IpAC), which uses trained clinicians working closely with ECU health students to deliver quality health care to the community;
  • The Health and Wellness Institute, which develops programs for those with chronic diseases, including treating cancer through exercise; and
  • The Health Simulation Centre, a world-class high-fidelity training environment that uses actors to simulate real-life situation that health care professionals may encounter.

Mr McGowan said that Western Australia has traditionally focused on mining, but the State needs to look beyond that sector to remain successful.

“One of the things that concerns me is that other parts of the economy are not given the attention they deserve by government.”

He listed science and technology, tourism and manufacturing as sectors that required renewed support, with universities having a key role to play.

“Freeing up universities to do what they do best, which is research and provide opportunities for students, is something we will be focusing on.”
