Advanced and Complex Medical Emergencies (ACME)

Course description

The Advanced and Complex Medical Emergencies (ACME) course aims to use simulation-training methods to improve the understanding of human factors and their impact on the quality of team-based clinical care within the specific emergency medicine environment. The course also features an update on key clinical skills with core modules on cardiovascular instability, airway and respiratory emergencies and complex emergencies.

While there is a significant immersive simulation component to the course, there are also small group discussions and mini-scenarios on various aspects of the complex specialty of emergency medicine. The course aims to stimulate and provoke the experienced physician practicing emergency medicine and who wishes to be challenged. Because the emphasis in this course is on learning and sharing information, there is no formal assessment of participants.

Target audience

The ACME Course is available to Fellows, Advanced Trainees in their final two years of training, Emergency Medicine Certificate holders, SMO/CMOs working in emergency departments. Trainees must provide a letter of support from their DEMT prior to registration for the Course. SMO/CMOs must provide a letter of support from the FACEM Director prior to registration for the Course.

Fellowship in the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine

Objectives

  • human factors;
  • cardiovascular instability;
  • airway and respiratory emergencies;
  • complex emergencies;
  • death, dying and stress in the emergency department; and
  • behavioural emergencies.

Skills

  • airway: intubation in suspected c-spine injury; difficult intubation strategies, surgical airway, Laryngeal Mask Airway;
  • breathing: O2 therapy, positive pressure ventilation via endotracheal tube; BiPhasic Positive Airway Pressure [BiPAP];
  • cardiovascular: advanced cardiac life support; defibrillation, synchronised DC cardioversion, transcutaneous cardiac pacing, venous access; and
  • paediatric BLS and ALS.

Training methods

  • intensive hands-on training;
  • clinical skills and drills training;
  • pause and discuss scenarios;
  • immersive simulations; and
  • problem based learning.

Training technologies

  • part-task trainers; and
  • low, medium and high fidelity manikin simulators.

Course format and duration

The course is presented over two and a half days in the following format:

  • activities focus on realistic simulations of common medical emergencies;
  • all participants have an opportunity to participate in the management of a simulated emergency; and
  • strict confidentiality is maintained.
