Incident in the waiting room

This training resource, ‘Incident in the waiting room – Managing upwards to avoid adverse events’, uses a problem-based learning scenario to highlight the importance of managing upwards (or ‘getting things done through those who supervise us’) and its implications for interprofessional collaborative practice.

To use this resource, you will need to read the Facilitators' Guide and view the simulation-based video (please see the instructions provided below).

The scenario

A young resident doctor has recently started work in a regional hospital. In the waiting room of this hospital a man collapses. An experienced nurse takes charge of the care for this patient, but is not using current evidence-based practice. The young resident doctor wants to intervene, but does not know how to address his experienced colleague.

How to use this IPL training resource

This resource consists of two components: a simulation-based video, and an accompanying Facilitators' Guide. To complete this resource, you will need to read the Guide and view relevant scenes from the video when directed. At relevant points you will be asked to reflect on the content covered and answer related questions.

Specifically, the resource requires that you:

  • Read Sections One and Two of the Guide and answer the questions on interprofessional learning, and managing upwards to avoid adverse events;
  • Watch the simulation-based video ‘Incident in the waiting room’ and answer the questions in Section Three of the guide; and
  • Refer to Section Four of the Guide for a literature review about managing upwards, particularly to avoid adverse events.

Learning outcomes

The key interprofessional learning message of this resource is: Managing upwards to avoid adverse events - how to address incorrect behaviour in an acute situation.

Learning outcomes will be addressed through the consideration and discussion of content provided on interprofessional practice generally and, more specifically, on managing upwards to avoid adverse events.
