Industry backing for Graduate Certificate in Geostatistics

ECU Key Staff: Associate Professor Ute Mueller
Engagement Partners: BHP / Riotinto

The Graduate Certificate in Geostatistics is largely taken by students working in the mining industry. Current students work at Rio Tinto; BHP Billiton; Newmont; Cube Consulting; and Snowdens' Mining Industry Consultants. In the case of Rio Tinto, there have been up to four new enrolments per year. Regular liaison with industry ensures that the course content is appropriate, useful, and that it caters for the interests and needs of the students. The mining industry is represented on the Mathematics Consultative Committee. This involvement has led to funding from BHP Billiton to upgrade to commercial software for the Certificate as well as acting in an advisory role for more practically oriented geostatisticians at Riotinto.
