Leading Edge
Leading Edge is a 12-month intensive leadership development program for middle managers, based on extensive investigation of best practice in a number of countries around the world.
Leading Edge was initiated by the Joondalup Learning Precinct (JLP), comprising ECU, West Coast Institute of Training, WA Police Academy, with support also from City of Joondalup. It was developed after considerable collaboration between stakeholders and consultation with local industry.
This custom program draws on the resources of the three institutions to improve development of staff leadership. A major advantage is the fresh perspectives gained from learning with people external to the learner's own organisation, and the program typically has around 50 per cent of its participants drawn from other JLP members. Other participants have come from around 20 WA public, private and non-profit organisations.
The program involves six two-day workshops and six evening meetings, assignments and a workplace project. Presenters are university staff and industry-based leadership development consultants considered amongst the best in Perth, as well as industry guest speakers including CEOs and managing directors.
Participants have been very positive about the practical skills and self-development provided by this unique program. Most gain promotion or a higher-level position within the period of the program or soon after. The program develops soft skills and self-awareness using innovative interactive group facilitation methods. Other learning methods include peer mentoring, learning from 'role-model' leaders, a reflective journal, a 'self-audit', a workplace project and a career development plan. Completion of the program provides three units credit towards a Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma or MBA.
