Centre of Excellence for Alzheimer's Disease Research and Care
The Centre of Excellence for Alzheimer's Disease Research and Care is a collaborative research group of scientists based at ECU's Joondalup Campus and the McCusker Foundation at Hollywood Hospital in Nedlands.
The Centre's mission is to lower the impact that Alzheimer's disease has on the community and to enhance the quality of life of people affected by this devastating disease. The Centre's vision is to see a world without Alzheimer's disease.
The Centre is unique in that it brings together leading researchers in different disciplines - from prominent clinical researchers to leading exercise physiologists and state-of-the-art brain imaging experts. The Centre has established collaboration and partnerships with researchers from the Australian Neuromuscular Research Institute, Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, Hollywood Private Hospital, University of Western Australia, Curtin University, Murdoch University, University of Notre Dame, and Fremantle Hospital.
Research programs include:
- Molecular understanding of Alzheimer's Disease
- Diagnostics and Biomarkers
- Lifestyle Interventions
- Population-Based Health Outcomes
- Care Strategies for Alzheimer's Disease
- Clinical Trials and Therapeutics
One of the above programs, the Diagnostic and Biomarkers program, has led to the Centre obtaining a CSIRO Flagship grant of $3 million in partnership with Melbourne University and the CSIRO.
The funding will recruit 1000 volunteers in Perth and Melbourne, which will be the largest and most comprehensive study of its kind in the world and should lead to considerably more funding from pharmaceutical companies.
