BHP Billiton maintenance engineering training partnership
ECU's School of Engineering has developed, in close consultation with BHP Billiton-Nickel West, a specialized development course in industrial maintenance. The University Certificate in Maintenance Engineering (course code T23), targets non-graduates as well as graduates in this field and comprises four units of study. It covers a broad range of topics ranging from the principles of industrial maintenance to condition monitoring, maintenance planning and a workplace-based project. Further, a state-of-the-art vibrations and condition-monitoring laboratory has also been specifically developed and incorporated into the course, allowing participants to learn using (largely) industry-practice equipment.
The course first ran in the summer semester of 2010 and three intakes of students have now entered the course. Although a relatively small and specialized course, successive intakes have seen an expansion in the mix of industries from which participants are drawn. This is due to the strong industry relevance of this course, the inclusion of flexible and remote delivery modes as well as efforts to promote the course to industry.
