Boat-based recreational fishing project
ECU and the WA Department of Fisheries have established a research partnership to improve the management of boat-based recreational fishing in WA. The project aims to provide a detailed estimation of the quantity of fish caught and released from each WA fishing region. The data collection involves randomly selecting fishermen to be surveyed and using the survey results to inform fisheries management.
A number of postgraduate research projects are also being utilized to improve the collection and analysis of the data. Both the Department of Fisheries and ECU benefit from this project. The department is provided with access to expertise in implementing very large-scale surveys and access to highly qualified researchers to conduct analyses of the data. ECU researchers are able to access a unique data set on recreational fishing and new postgraduate research scholarships and co-supervisory expertise provided by the WA Department of Fisheries.
