Call for contributions

You are invited to participate in Quality Conversations at HERDSA 2002 by submitting a paper or abstract for inclusion in the conference program that address the conference theme. In the interest of maximising participation by a broad range of presenters, please restrict your contributions (individual or jointly) to no more than three submissions.
Proposals will be accepted in two forms:

The deadline for submission of either a Full Paper or an Abstract is 29 January, 2001.
Full papers submitted for the refereed conference publication will be reviewed according to DETYA refereeing standards.

For a paper to be accepted for the Refereed Conference Publication, the principal author must be registered for the conference.

Submission of papers and abstracts

Papers and abstracts should be submitted to: herdsa@debretts.com.au before Tuesday 29th January 2002. Please include 'submission' in the subject line. If you have difficulty emailing your paper please contact herdsa@debretts.com.au.

Information for presenters

One author should be nominated as a contact person, and all correspondence will be with this person. Authors of papers accepted for the refereed publication must be registered for the conference by 3 May, 2002 (Close of Early Bird registration) for the paper to be included. In the case of papers with multiple authors, this means at least one author must be registered.

Conference format

The conference format enables delegates to contribute to the programme in a variety of ways. Each format will provide the opportunity for quality conversations to develop around challenging and engaging ideas in higher education. Delegates with refereed papers may present in any format they choose, delegates with reviewed abstracts are excluded from the Symposia.

This is summarised in the table below:

Publication type
Mode
Refereed paper
Non-refereed paper
Abstract
Symposia
Round Table
Workshop
Poster

  • Plenary sessions Keynote presentations that support the conference theme.
  • Symposia Refereed paper presentations of 20 minutes each that are grouped around a theme, either by the conference committee or by the presenters themselves. A panel discussion will follow. The theme may be discipline based, eg nurse education, or issue based, eg technology.
  • Round Tables 10-minute presentations of refereed papers or reviewed abstracts each followed by a conversation. Delegates will choose one of the presenters to talk with round a table.
  • Workshops Extended activity and discussion based sessions around refereed papers or reviewed abstracts.
  • Posters Visual presentations of either refereed papers or reviewed abstracts to be displayed throughout the conference. A session will be scheduled in the programme for conversations with the author of a poster. Poster presentations can be the sole presentation mode chosen OR delegates can chose to give a poster presentation on the same topic as their symposia paper, their round table session, or their workshop topic.

Edith Cowan University 2002 Centenary Prize for the best paper on an authentic learning environment

Applications are invited for the Edith Cowan University Authentic Learning Award which will be presented at the 2002 HERDSA Conference.

The purpose of the award is to promote the development of authentic learning environments in all facets of university teaching and learning, and to support the dissemination and publication of good practice associated with these environments. An authentic learning environment can be described as one where activities represent the types of complex tasks performed by professionals in the field, rather than decontextualised or contrived activities. Students have access to supporting resources and engage in collaboration, articulation and reflection as they produce outcomes typical of quality performance.

The award will comprise a certificate and prize of $1000 and it will be awarded to the paper which in the opinion of a panel of judges makes a significant contribution to knowledge about authentic learning environments in higher education. To nominate for the Edith Cowan University 2002 Centenary Prize, refer to the conditions and procedures
