Professor Andrew Woodward presents at the 2018 World STEMM Equality Congress in Amsterdam.
The 2018 World STEMM Equality Congress took place on 11-12 October in Amsterdam, Holland with ECU’s Executive Dean, School of Science, Professor Andrew Woodward talking about ways to identify male advocates for equality in the workplace.
Professor Woodward was joined by a collective of thought leaders from around the world including speakers from the United Nations and UNESCO, who provided insights on best practice, inclusion strategies and policy that will drive diversity in STEMM culture. Gary Loke, Director of Insights, Innovation and Delivery at Advance HE (UK) was also a key speaker at the event, presenting on the international operation of the Athena SWAN and Race Equality Charters.
In optimising strategies that will engage male advocates for change, Professor Woodward noted the importance of making sure that gender equality is seen as a business issue which impacts the ability to create and innovate.
“There is an ongoing perception that gender quality is about women but this is not the case, it certainly isn’t at ECU”.
Professor Woodward stressed the impact of genuine ‘change agents’ at all levels of the organisation, noting that senior leaders must find ways to encourage and nurture advocates at all levels through genuine engagement and by making it relatable.
“Make it a 'KLI' – a key life indicator for staff and link it to their career progression!”
ECU were proud to be diamond sponsors of this global event in partnership with The University of Amsterdam, Accenture, Elsevier and the University of Westminster.
