Professor Caroline Finch AO, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research)
Creating career opportunities for women in higher education is the key focus of the recently launched Sponsorship Guidelines from Universities Australia which took place on 20 November 2018. Across all sectors, while there has been a strong push for women in leadership roles in recent decades, women still remain underrepresented in leadership with only 17.1% of Australian CEO’s being women according to the 2017/2018 Workplace Gender Equality Agency gender scorecard.
As part of the launch, the co-Chairs of the Universities Australia Executive Women’s Group (UAEW) for 2019/2020 were announced - ECU’s own Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), Professor Caroline Finch AO and University of New South Wales Deputy Vice-Chancellor Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, Professor Eileen Baldry.
UAEW is a significant national group directly sponsored by Universities Australia. It provides ongoing strategic advice and high-level guidance to Australian Universities and their governing bodies, relevant associated organisations and state/territory-based networks committed to improving the representation of women, both academic and professional, at executive levels of university leadership and governance.
ECU’s Athena SWAN Lead and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Strategic Partnerships), Professor Cobie nominated Professor Finch for the prestigious role.
“Sponsorship is an active way to progress women, and for me that also includes women supporting women at the senior levels. In doing this, we are role-modelling that advancing gender equality is a long-term commitment and spans the whole career trajectory.”
