John Hall started his working life as a schoolteacher and taught in Australia, UK and Canada. After undertaking postgraduate studies at the University of Calgary in Canada, John returned to Australia to a lecturing position at Curtin University in 1981, where he taught research methodology, philosophy and cross-cultural education.

John took early retirement from Curtin University in 2003 to be a freelance editor and writing coach. John has provided editorial support to academic staff in the Faculty of Education and Arts at ECU since 2004. In May 2012 he became the Research Writing Consultant in the Faculty of Business and Law.

John's role as Research Writing Consultant in the Faculty of Business and Law is an educative one – collaborating with supervisors in the faculty to give feedback to and coach research postgraduates on their writing of proposals, theses, journal papers, and book chapters.
