Masters Proposal Presentation by Jane Tudor-Owen

The School of Law & Justice invites you to a Masters Proposal Presentation by Jane Tudor-Owen:

Is preparation everything? The use of formal plans in investigative interviews with witnesses.

The PEACE model of investigative interviewing identifies five stages of the interview process:

  • Preparation and planning;
  • Engage and explain;
  • Account, clarification and challenge;
  • Closure; and
  • Evaluation.
The model, originally developed in 1992 by the Central Planning and Training Unit in the United Kingdom, is currently employed by the Western Australia Police. Whilst planning is considered to be a key aspect of investigative interviewing, limited data exists which examines the planning stages of any investigative interviewing models.

The proposed study will examine police recruits' formal plans for witness interviews. Specifically, the study will examine how the content and number of items included in police recruits' formal plans changes following specific points in training. The study will then examine what relationship, if any, exists between the content and number of items included in police recruits' formal plans and the content and number of items covered in the corresponding interviews.

Date: Friday 17th August
Time: 10.00am
Location: Joondalup Campus, building 2, room 443 (The Val Pervan boardroom)
