ECU students impress at inter-university business skills competition

Thursday, 15 September 2011

Four Faculty of Business and Law students recently competed at the 2011 Deloitte Dream Team competition, held at the Deloitte offices in Perth. Michael Fitzgerald, Jessie Johnson, Kirsty Miller and Stephen Peghini were selected by Deloitte to take part from over 300 applications.

Deloitte Dream Team is an annual inter-university business competition that sees students compete in their university teams to solve realistic problems and scenarios, with students who perform well given the opportunity to complete a paid summer internship with Deloitte.

Michael, Jessie, Kirsty and Stephen gathered on Friday 26 August and were given a case study about a cyclone disaster, for which they had to come up with a recovery plan.

They presented their ideas five days later on Wednesday 31 August to a panel of Deloitte judges and university representatives. Twelve teams took part on the night, with the ECU team placing fourth after narrowly missing out on third place by just one point.

Bachelor of Business student Stephen Peghini, majoring in Accounting and Business Law, found the experience both challenging and exciting.

“It was an extremely difficult but fun challenge that allowed us to apply our business knowledge in a practical sense, giving us insight into the real-life industry work conducted and the fast-paced movement of it all,” he said.

He also advised other students interested in participating in the future to seize the opportunity.

"I strongly encourage other students who have applied for vacation work to apply for the Deloitte Dream Team, as it's a great way to get real life experience and apply all the practical knowledge you gain in Business Edge. There is also the opportunity to network, enabling you to stand out above the rest and be seen and heard by Deloitte."

Stephen has now secured a paid summer internship with Deloitte as a result of the Dream Team competition.
