Senior Lecturer in Planning Mr Tim Perkins is part of a team of researchers recently awarded $176,000 under the Australian Learning and Teaching Council’s (ALTC) Innovation and Development research grant program.
Tim will play a substantive role in the research project, titled ‘Experiential learning in Planning education: resources and tools for good practice’, joining researchers from the University of the Sunshine Coast, Griffith University, University of Tasmania, and La Trobe University.
The project responds to the identified need to increase the professionalism of Planning graduates in Australia by matching skill gaps with practical training. It will also address the need to bring planning educators and practitioners closer together, and to increase the collaboration between Planning schools and the Planning Institute of Australia, the peak accrediting body representing the planning profession in Australia.
The overall aim of the project is to develop an integrated package of resources that will serve to promote and enable delivery of good practice experiential learning in Australian planning education, which will in turn contribute to improving student learning outcomes.
Tim is delighted to be a part of the team carrying out the research.
“This research is fundamental in improving the relevancy of planning education in Australia. It will increase awareness of emerging issues in planning education, and will also help educators to meet the demand for new skills in the profession. I am delighted to be involved, as experiential learning already forms a core part of our own Planning courses and we are keen to continue to develop in that direction,” he said.
The research project will commence in October, and is expected to continue for the next two years.
