This week is National Volunteer Week (9 – 15 May), and to celebrate, the Faculty of Business and Law has a special announcement. Eight students from the Faculty have been selected to form a major part of the volunteer task force for the 2011 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).
CHOGM occurs every two years, held this year in Perth from 28 to 30 October. It will be the biggest international event held in Perth for 50 years.
The following eight Faculty of Business and Law students have been selected to undertake the positions of Administration Support Volunteers:
These students will work with Volunteering WA to recruit and train 500 other volunteers in the coming months. The students will also get the chance to become Team Leaders during the event.
Faculty staff members Ms Janet Simmons, Workplace Opportunities Co-ordinator, and Dr Megan Le Clus, lecturer, recently attended the Volunteering WA CHOGM 2011 Volunteer Program launch event, held on Thursday 28 April in the Perth Cultural Centre.
Premier Colin Barnett was also in attendance, and praised ECU’s involvement in the task force.
“It is great that ECU students will be involved in CHOGM, in partnership with Volunteering WA. Students from different countries may have the opportunity to meet representatives from their home countries,” he said.
Dr Megan Le Clus, who worked with Ms Janet Simmons and Volunteering WA to provide this opportunity to Business and Law students, believes the partnership will provide students with quality work and life experience.
“Working with Volunteering WA and participating in the CHOGM 2011 Volunteer Program provides our students with the unique opportunity to be part of the largest-ever gathering of world leaders in Australia. They will undergo extensive training and be exposed to a wide range of learning experiences that will complement the formal learning they receive at university,” she said.
Other students who want to be involved with CHOGM 2011 still have the chance to submit an application to volunteer as a Venue Officer, Transport Officer or Driver for the event. Applications will close in mid-May, and positions are filling up fast.
