Business i Lab students receive their certificates
On Tuesday 31 May, ECU Business students, the City of Wanneroo and local businesses celebrated the partnership and work achieved during the Business i Lab program in Semester One 2011. The celebration was held at the Civic Centre in Wanneroo, and included a presentation of certificates to participating students and businesses.
The Business i Lab program intends to help local businesses and entrepreneurs bring ideas to life through the input of ECU Business students. As part of the BES3100 Business Career Development unit, skilled students are assigned to pursue appropriate local business submissions, in collaboration with the City of Wanneroo.
The work integrated learning experience saw students team up with businesses such as WA Insurance Brokers, PoolWerx, Elite Screen Printing, Bosch Timber Flooring, Alert Dog Training and many more.
Final year Bachelor of Business student Westley Empeigne completed his placement with Angelhands Inc., a not-for-profit organisation that aims to provide assistance to individuals and group victims of violent crimes or who have lost someone due to homicide. Westley was assigned the task of preparing all necessary documents for a grant application for funding of new IT equipment.
“The program helped me to improve employability skills like developing initiative; communicating effectively with the staff, other volunteers and government agencies; receiving and giving feedback; analysing in view of problem solving; and really being accountable for what I was doing, since the success of the grant application depended in great part on that document,” he said.
Jay Hooda, Bachelor of Engineering/Bachelor of Business student, completed his placement with South Perth Out of School Centre Inc. and noted that the program also opened doors for future careers.
“This program is a gateway to career opportunities for business students, as it provides a realistic perspective to the workplace and potential career paths.”
