2011 student prize winners
The Faculty of Business and Law’s top students from 2011 gathered together on Wednesday 14 March to celebrate their success alongside staff and sponsors at the annual Student Prize Evening, held at the State Reception Centre (Fraser’s Restaurant) in Kings Park.
The Student Prize Evening is an annual event to formally recognise the Faculty’s hardest-working undergraduate, postgraduate and research students. The prizes are sponsored by many donors and organisations in industries relevant to students’ study areas. This year over 50 prizes were awarded, from sponsors across a range of areas, including business, law, accounting, marketing, tourism, management and human resources.
Dr Alicia Stanway from the School of Marketing, Tourism and Leisure hosted the presentations as Master of Ceremonies for the night, and after a congratulatory speech from the Faculty’s Executive Dean, Professor Atique Islam, each winner had the chance to accept their award on stage and receive a photograph with their sponsor. Some students who are now working overseas and in remote areas were unable to attend, but still sent a few words of thanks that were read out on the night.
The 2011 Faculty medal winners were also formally recognised. The Faculty of Business and Law Medal, for the highest achieving student who graduated from a three or four year undergraduate degree, was awarded to Satwant Singh. The Faculty of Business and Law Research Medal, a prize for the eligible Higher Degree by Research graduate who completed the most outstanding research thesis, was awarded to Dr Kathryn France.
Dr Abhay Kumar Singh was awarded the prestigious University Research Medal. Dr Singh’s thesis, ‘Modelling extreme market risk - a study of tail related risk measures’, was recognised as the most outstanding research thesis completed across the whole of ECU last year.
After the ceremony, students and sponsors were able to network, overlooking stunning river and city views. Drinks and canapés were served, while classical music trio Wonderful With Wine provided entertainment.
Complimentary photos from the evening will be sent to prize winners and sponsors.
