ECU’s Small and Medium Enterprise Research Centre (SMERC) recently celebrated the successful delivery of its Let’s Get Online (Let’s GO!) program to small business owners in regional and metropolitan WA.

The Let’s GO! Program launched on 7 May 2010, with the aim of teaching 500 small business operators how to maximise the tools available to them on the internet to enhance their e-business skills, integrate their business with current technology and grow their customer base. The program is jointly run by SMERC, local councils, industry partners and regional development commissions, and is funded by a $457,000 AusIndustry grant.

Co-ordinated and delivered by facilitators Ms Susie Vergers and Mr Mike Smith, the program’s success was such that its original target of achieving 500 participants was exceeded by 15 percent, having nearly 570 participants overall.

Program participant Dana Kenworthy, of Dana Kenworthy Photography, believed Let’s GO! was fundamental in assisting small business owners to ensure that their web presence was boosted and their e-business skills were optimised.

“Let’s GO! wasn’t just about websites, it was about an overall web presence for your small business, including social media. The seminars provided small businesses with many options for web tool selection, search engine optimisation and e-marketing solutions, and were also a great opportunity to network with others,” she said.

Director of SMERC, Professor Beth Walker, found that Let’s GO! was one of the most significant programs ever developed by SMERC.

“This program really did make a difference to many West Australian business owners. We are thankful to AusIndustry for the funding and appreciative of the support shown by our Industry partners, without which we could not have achieved such a successful outcome for our participants,” she said.

ECU’s commitment to sharing the expertise of its research with the small business community through the Let’s GO! program has seen many of the participants already report increased sales as a result of the online changes they have made.
