2010 ECU Sport Management graduate Ashleigh Davis has been awarded a $10,000 scholarship, the 2011 Dr Heather MacGowan OAM Scholarship, by the Department of Sport and Recreation.

The Dr Heather MacGowan OAM Scholarship recognises the life’s work and achievements of an inspirational and extraordinary individual. Dr MacGowan had a long and distinguished career in sport and recreation in several states in Australia, in professional, academic and volunteer roles.

The scholarship is awarded annually to a young person aged between 18 and 30 years who is currently working in the sport and recreation industry, and who is identified as having the potential to make a significant contribution to sport and recreation in the Western Australian community.

Ashleigh is currently the Club Development Officer at Triathlon WA (TWA), after she completed a practical placement there in 2009 as part of her Sport Management course. Ashleigh was also a recipient of a 2010 Faculty of Business and Law student prize, coincidentally the Dr Heather MacGowan OAM Award for Professional Practice in Sport, Recreation and Event Management.

Ashleigh will use the scholarship to undertake research into promoting and marketing international sporting events. She will travel overseas to Ireland and the USA to work alongside the marketing and sponsorship managers of various triathlon and Ironman events.

“The scholarship will allow me to gain hands-on experience in international events that I can bring back to not only Triathlon WA but other sporting associations with Western Australia,” she said.

Executive Officer of TWA, Ms Hayley Lethlean, believes Ashleigh’s scholarship is well-deserved.

“Ashleigh tackles everyday with enthusiasm, professionalism and vigour. She is a credit to the sporting industry and Triathlon WA is privileged to have her on our team.”
