University of Bath students assist ECU researchers

Monday, 27 June 2011

Psychology students from the University of Bath (UK) have recently been assisting with research projects in ECU’s School of Law and Justice. Melissa Collof, Rachel McElhone, Jessica Groves and Josh Harwood have all undertaken research assistant positions as a practical placement for their Psychology courses.

Melissa, Rachel and Jessica all spent a year with the School of Law and Justice, helping to gather research in WA prisons by interviewing prisoners. They also reviewed and edited articles, and received help from ECU staff with their dissertations.

Josh is on a shorter placement, working with Dr Adrian Scott and Dr Julian Dooley on a number of research projects concerned with online security and cyber bullying. As part of the cyber bullying project, he will be investigating the implications of extensive computer use in schools by handing out questionnaires and also by asking students to complete a computer game about mental health.

In addition, Josh is currently writing a paper about the perceptions of privacy in the digital age, with the support of and Dr Julian Dooley and Dr Adrian Scott.

“It’s great to have the opportunity to complete a placement with ECU’s School of Law and Justice, and gain real-life research experience,” he said.

Melissa, Rachel and Jessica have all recently returned to the UK to complete their final year of study, while Josh will return in August.
