Three ECU students recently put their knowledge and skills to the test at the Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) National Championship in Sydney, held last week from 13 to 15 July. As part of the competition, undergraduate students Dominic Lindsay and Alyce De Biasi and postgraduate student Rebecca Wang delivered a presentation on three projects that the ECU SIFE chapter has been working on for the past year.
Established in 1975 in the USA, SIFE was originally a regional leadership training program attended by university students who were required to teach their communities what they had learned and then be judged competitively on the outcomes of their efforts.
Today, SIFE programs encompass both teaching and learning, with students designing their own outreach projects and using their university knowledge to practically apply their skills in a way that is meaningful to the wider community. SIFE programs are active at over 2,000 campuses in 48 countries.
This year’s SIFE National Championship gave Dominic, Alyce and Rebecca the opportunity to put what they have learnt in their studies into practice, delivering a 25 minute presentation to a panel of industry judges on their three outreach projects, developed with Love Angels Foundation, Volunteering WA (CHOGM 2011) and Nexus.
Although the competition saw the University of Melbourne selected as the winning team, who will now compete in the worldwide competition in Kuala Lumpur in October, the ECU SIFE team found the entire experience to be inspiring.
“The conference was very beneficial. We presented three great projects with huge potential, and had the opportunity to meet business leaders and other students from all over Australia. We have returned with a fresh pool of ideas and some great new networks,” said Alyce De Biasi, ECU SIFE Human Resources Officer and Bachelor of Business student.
The students also had the chance to meet the industry judges during the competition, and attend career and networking events to help them find potential future employment.
Congratulations to the ECU SIFE team on a fantastic effort at the championships.
