Research workshops
A number of research workshops are available from March to May to assist Postgraduate students with their research proposals, and to improve their research writing skills. The workshops are run by Dr Greg Maguire, Research Writing Consultant for the Faculty of Business and Law and the Faculty of Computing, Health and Science, and are aimed at Honours, Master by Research and PhD students.
The workshops are summarised below and a link is provided to the events calendar for dates and times.
Troubleshooting with Research Proposals Workshop
This workshop is aimed at students who have yet to submit their Proposals. Participants will be encouraged to discuss the challenges they face with their Proposals. Proposal seminar strategies will also be considered.
Research Writing Skills Workshop 1 – Introduction
This workshop deals with the more common writing faults and the structure of journal papers and theses. It also includes editing exercises.
Research Writing Skills Workshop 2 – Bridging the Gap
This workshop deals with the gap between efficient sentences and the structure of a journal paper or thesis. It offers advice on how to structure arguments and ‘stories’ within major sections, and rxamples of early career writing are reviewed.
Research Writing Skills Workshop 3 – Arguing with References
This workshop deals with how appropriate references or quotes support arguments in a journal paper or thesis. Examples of references and quotes that might be inappropriate are reviewed.
