Academic writing consultant

Dr John Hall is the Faculty of Business and Law’s Academic Writing Consultant (AWC). Dr Hall works under the direction of the Associate Dean Research, Professor Grant Michelson and in collaboration with faculty research supervisors and Research Consultant, Dr Robyn Morris.

Dr Hall's primary task is to support research students (PhD, Masters by research, and Honours) with their academic writing – research proposals, theses and research publication submissions. He may also – at the discretion of the Associate Dean Research – provide editorial and coaching support for the faculty's academic staff with their publication writing.

How does the Academic Writing Consultant assist researchers?

The AWC's role is an educative one, aimed at the improvement of research authors' writing skills, not just the 'repair' of their written documents. The improvement comes about through 'conversations' in conjunction with feedback on authors' particular drafts of their proposals, thesis chapters and journal articles. In these conversations the AWC encourages authors to plan their writing carefully and endeavour to write:

  • clearly
  • coherently
  • concisely
  • informatively
  • reasonably
  • interestingly

Resources

Research students can contact the AWC regarding:

  • individual or small-group meetings (by appointment)
  • writing well workshops – open to all research postgraduates in the faculty
  • resources available via this website
  • referral to recommended commercial proofreaders
