Dr Megan Huggett and Dr Christin Säwström, of the Centre of Marine Ecosystem Research, were both recently awarded faculty research grants. Dr Megan Huggett will use her grant for work on the effects of global climate change on macroalgae and Dr Christin Säwström will investigate bacterial carbon sources and productivity in seagrass meadows in West Australian coastal ecosystems. Megan’s research will assess the role of temperature stress and microbial community ecology in macroalgal disease, an increasing concern for Australia’s temperate reef systems. Christin’s research will help to build the microbial dimension into coastal food webs and allow for the incorporation of microbial activities in carbon budgets of coastal ecosystems. Megan’s research will be done in collaboration with researchers at the University of Western Australia and the University of New South Wales, and both Megan and Christin will collaborate with colleagues within the Centre for Marine Ecosystem Research (Associate Professor Glenn Hyndes and Dr Kathryn McMahon).
