A successfully-written thesis is one that correctly references the works of others, is written to style and answers the questions set out in your research proposal.
Scope and length of thesis/project
The length of the research thesis or project will depend on your study, discipline and research methodology and should be discussed with your supervisor.
As a guide to the word length for different types of theses, excluding references and appendices:
- Masters by Research (two years duration): 50,000 – 60,000 words maximum;
- Doctor of Philosophy: 80,000 – 100,000 words maximum; and
- Professional Doctorate: 30,000 – 60,000 words maximum
