Mental Health Week - Volunteer Opportunity
Tuesday, 27 September 2011
Mental Health Week commences on Sunday 9 October with an Official Opening, the week then continues with a series of community events throughout the week (please see attached Mental Health Week Bulletin for a full list of these events). The week concludes with a Closing Ceremony on Sunday 16 October.
The aim of Mental Health Week is to bring about education and increasing awareness and understanding of mental health and to reduce the stigma of mental illness in Western Australia. The week is a community event with activities taking place all over Western Australia.
The Mental Illness Fellowship of WA Inc and WA Association for Mental Health Inc (WAAMH) are hosting the Official Opening of Mental Health Week on the Sunday 9 October. Here are further details on the day:
Official Opening of Mental Health Week
Sunday 9 October from 11.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m.
Hyde Park—Stage Area (near cnr of William and Vincent Street)
Officially opened by the Minister for Mental Health, Hon. Helen Morton MLC
Special guests
Spirit of the Streets Choir and a Quartet from the WA Youth Jazz Orchestra.
Guest Speaker Ryan Campbell
There will also be a Come and Try Beginners Hip Hop Dance Class
The theme this year is ‘Let’s Talk about it’, so there will be free coffee available to people on the day and tables and chairs for people to sit down at and have a chat, creating a coffee shop environment to encourage people to talk to each other about how mental illness has touched their lives. We need journalism or health promotion students to volunteer on the day to talk to people about their experiences of mental health and how it has touched their lives. We will provide the students with a brief as guide for open discussion. We are wishing to record these conversions with permissions from the people attending the event, in the form a podcasts to post on the WAAMH website after the event.
Please find attached Mental Health Week Bulletin which includes all the events to date which is updated regularly, a the Mental Health Week poster and resources order form.
I hope to hear from you soon. If you need any further information, please don’t hesitate to call me on 9228 0200.
