Voiceworks 87 callout for submissions
Tuesday, 06 September 2011
Voiceworks magazine is currently seeking submissions from young writers for our 87th issue, themed Play (Summer 2011-12). We accept submissions at all times, but the deadline for this issue is coming up soon: Sunday, September 18.
Voiceworks is a national, quarterly magazine featuring new writing and artwork by Australians under 25. We publish and pay for short fiction, poetry, nonfiction and visual art, including comics.
We love reading and publishing new voices, so if that’s you, we’re really eager to hear from you and read your work. We read all submissions on merit alone – we choose the content of the magazine without looking at the author’s name or publishing history. And even if you’re unsuccessful, our editorial committee provides considered and personalised feedback on all submissions.
Here's a little blurb pertaining to the theme:
It's sun-bright, and as you summon up images of your kidhood idols, the famous five and the river, you touch the strands of your braided hair and feel like a warrior. Your body, a fist, a bomb, erupts into water and you almost drown with the happiness, the cool of that summer. There are mixtapes, tequila and boys merging into the sun-line on your thighs. You spend nights whispering between covers, only to hear monsters beneath the bed whimper. You think: bliss, sweat, beat, sex. You touch yourself for the first time and play into the hands of every boy who called you beautiful. You fall in and out of yourself, doorways, places and people.
But the theme isn’t everything – the above is just a starting point. Think laterally, experiment, have fun. The theme can serve as inspiration, but we’re just as likely to take a piece that doesn’t speak to the theme as one that does. We want good writing most of all.
