What happens after 'happily ever after'?
Friday, 10 August 2012
The Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) presents a season of 'Into the Woods', the magical Tony award-winning hit musical by Stephen Sondheim, adapted from the book by James Lapine, at The Geoff Gibbs Theatre from 25 August to 1 September 2012.
Inspired by the timeless tales of the Brothers Grimm, 'Into the Woods' is the story of a baker and his wife who journey "into the woods" on a quest to lift a witch’s curse. Along the way they cross paths with Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, Cinderella and an assortment of other fairy tale characters.
They each pursue individual wishes until their stories become entangled in unexpected ways – revealing that ‘happily ever after’ doesn’t always turn out the way we hope...
Sondheim’s wickedly witty score weaves a magical spell upon all who listen, with such enchanting gems as ‘Children Will Listen’, ‘Giants In The Sky’ and ‘No One Is Alone’.
“To quote Sondheim’s lyric, “Sometimes the things you most wish for are not to be touched”. Well, not in this case. It is an honour and a joy to have the opportunity to explore and present one of Sondheim’s masterpieces with this tenacious bunch of WAAPA students. They are all balancing on the precipice, “excited and scared” to launch themselves into the industry, leaving behind the comfort of WAAPA to venture “Into the Woods” and hunt down the thing they most wish for. I can only step back and marvel at their quest, until we “find each other in the woods again”, said Director, Tanya Mitford.
Performed by WAAPA’s 3rd Year Music Theatre students, with direction from Tanya Mitford, music direction from Lloyd Butler and choreography from Bernie Bernard, this is an event not to be missed.
