WAAPA grads celebrated as theatre’s best
WAAPA graduates Lucy Durack, Ben Lewis and Claude Marcos are celebrating after winning top honours at the prestigious 2012 Sydney Theatre Awards.
WAAPA graduates Lucy Durack, Ben Lewis and Claude Marcos are celebrating after winning top honours at the prestigious 2012 Sydney Theatre Awards.
Held on Monday, 14 January the awards celebrate the best and brightest in Sydney theatre.
WAAPA music theatre graduate Lucy Durack won the 2012 Judith Johnson Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical for the title role of Elle Woods in Legally Blonde.
The Judith Johnson Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical went to fellow WAAPA graduate Ben Lewis for his portrayal of the Phantom in the production Love Never Dies.
Claude Marcos graduated from WAAPA in 2005 with a degree in set and costume design. He won the 2012 award for Best Stage Design in a Mainstream Production for his work on Thyestes.
A number of WAAPA graduates also received nominations at the awards including:
- Lisa McCune for her lead role in South Pacific
- Eddie Perfect for his supporting role in South Pacific
- Alex Rathberger for his supporting role in An Officer and a Gentleman
- Shari Sebbens as best newcomer in A Hoax
WAAPA Director Professor Julie Warn congratulated all winners and nominees on their fantastic achievements.
“We are proud of all our WAAPA graduates and it’s fantastic to see their immense talent recognised by the wider performing arts community in such a positive way,” she said.
“One behalf of everyone here at WAAPA I congratulate each graduate on their achievements and wish them ongoing success.”
