Centre for Studies in Chinese Arts and Visual Culture

The Centre for Studies in Chinese Arts and Visual Culture was created to promote the study of the arts of China at a time when it's traditional culture is being fundamentally transformed by globalisation. The centre has links with artists, designer and researchers throughout China.

The centre’s first project, in partnership with Hainan University was the creation of the Sanya Design Biennale. The first biennale in November 2010 brought together architects and academics from China, Australia, France and the USA in a series of discussions and exhibitions about urban design.

Other centre projects include the publication of 'Contemporary Chinese Visual Culture: Tradition, Modernity and Globalisation', the Painting and Sculpture volume of the 'New Encyclopaedia of Chinese Cultures' as well as the promotion and exhibition of Chinese art, photography and philosophy.

In association with a consortium of Chinese universities the centre is developing a project that looks at the role of traditional practices in the teaching of design in China.
