Suzanne Covich graduated from the Doctor of Philosophy in Writing (SCA) in 2009. Her childhood memoir, “When We Remember They Call Us Liars” will be launched at the XWray Café, Essex St, Fremantle on 7 June at 6.30pm.
About the book
Growing up in the 1960s in a small rural community, Suzanne Covich is the dux of her primary-school classes. But it’s what she learns at home that shapes the Ten Out of Ten Kid into the girl who won’t cry, who plays dead, whose vulnerability is disguised beneath Huck Finn bravado. The girl whose father bashes her mother and crawls between his daughters’ sheets.
In this extraordinary memoir of childhood, Suzanne Covich writes in a voice as raw and compelling and alive as if she were sitting across from you with a cup of coffee, reading aloud.
About the author
Suzanne Covich spent her early years in a large family in the country, leaving school unwillingly at thirteen to work in an old people’s home. After entering university in her mid-thirties as a single mother, she went on to obtain a PhD in Creative Writing at Edith Cowan University.
