Associate Professor Daniel Galvao working with a cancer patient
ECU’s Health and Wellness Institute were invited by ABC’s Catalyst Program to take part in a documentary outlining ECU’s research into Exercise as Medicine.
The Health and Wellness Institute Researcher and Director, Associate Professor Daniel Galvao was featured in the episode. The segment focuses on the current evidence and treatments supporting exercise as an integral therapy for a range of chronic conditions.
Dr Galvao explains the role exercise plays during treatment for patients with prostate cancer. Research has shown that whilst undergoing treatment, a prostate cancer patient on testosterone suppressants can lose up to 4% bone density per year. Research is showing that exercise during treatment can not only preserve bone density during this period, but also prevent loss and may even prevent secondary cancer occurring.
